Finishing 6th grade is an exceptional milestone for children growing up in the compounds of Lusaka. So much fundamental learning takes place leading up to that year, and at Family Legacy, it is the launching point into the second half of their time in our Legacy Academy program.
Like beginning middle or junior high school in the United States, the 7th grade year marks an exciting change for our students that brings many new opportunities as they gear up for secondary school.
One significant change in 7th grade (called “Grade 7” in Zambia) is the expansion of available programs and academic enrichment, including:
- More access to computers
- Trade-related learning materials
- Extracurricular activities
- Additional physical care such as increased lunch portions and menstrual hygiene kits (for female students)
- More subject-specific classes such as English, Math, Science, and Social studies*
*Taught by teachers with higher degrees of certification and specific content knowledge.
This helps prepare students for secondary school, including the first Zambian national examination—a series of tests Zambia uses to determine academic readiness starting in grade 7. Accompanying increased academic support, sponsorship donations for grade 7 students increase to $72/month in January of their grade 7 year. If you sponsor a grade 6 child, please prayerfully consider continuing your investment in him or her for this exciting stage of his or her education.
This is a big transition for our students, and many of them are doing it without a sponsor. If you would like to equip vulnerable secondary students to face this phase of their education with the resources they need, please contact our Sponsorship Team at sponsorship@familylegacy.com or 972.620.2020 ext. 4.
