On a bright Wednesday morning, 76 7th grade students boarded a bus at the Legacy Academy at the Tree of Life Children’s Village where they attend school. They jostled down three miles of rural dirt roads until the bus hit the paved streets of the capital city of Lusaka. This was not an ordinary field trip. The group was headed to the National Assembly of Zambia on a trip paid for by a business created and run by themselves – designing and selling greeting cards to Camp Life participants.
The students filed off of the bus when they pulled up to the grand building, proud to be wearing their new blue and grey school uniforms, and were led into the building where a guide gave a history and overview of Zambia’s Parliament. He continued the presentation by explaining what occurs during sessions at the assembly, giving the students a better understanding of how the nation’s government runs.
“I learned about the procedures of parliament and how they take turns speaking,” 16-year-old Simon said. “Everything follows a very specific order.”
Following the info session, the students were escorted to the actual parliament house where meetings were in session. For more than an hour, they observed the process and discussions among members of parliament who only weeks earlier, rented out Legacy Lodge, one of Family Legacy’s facilities, to host meetings and discuss how to better operate Zambia.
“The women were speaking as confidently as the men during the discussions,” 12-year-old Elijah said. “It is nice to see how men and women can do the same job to help our country.”
The field trip was an important experience for the children to witness how decisions made in parliament impact their world. It showed how their government is set up to serve the people and serve them well. In a ministry passionate about transforming the nation of Zambia now and through future generations, this aspect of the experience was crucial. Family Legacy is raising up a generation of Christ-like leaders, boys and girls who will become strong men and women of God who intend to serve others as Christ would.
As the 7th-grade class toured the facility, the realization that they could one day be a member of parliament became tangible. What was once a far-off thought became a job they could now envision. Through our Child Sponsorship Program and opportunities such as this, the thought that being an orphan leads to an empty life of despair is coming to an end. The minds and hearts of these children are being transformed into knowing that as children of God, they can accomplish their goals. This generation of rescued orphans is capable. These children are worthy of joy, success and a hopeful future.
As God’s plan unfolds, He continually intertwines Family Legacy and the children in our programs with His desire for a revived nation of Zambia.
