Announcing the next step forward in bringing quality education to the children of Zambia . . . the Mtendere Ministry and Education Complex (Mtendere MEC)! The MEC will be the perfect companion to the network of Lifeway Christian Academies that is currently being developed across Lusaka by Family Legacy. Formerly the site of Jesus Cares Community School (where Camp LIFE was held in 2004), this facility became available earlier this summer and is currently undergoing needed renovations.

It is perhaps the largest facility in the Mtendere compound – so large that we will be able to put a soccer field and playground inside its walls. Because of its size, the MEC will be utilized in a number of ways.

The Mtendere MEC will serve the purpose of both a Community Resource Center (CRC) and a Lifeway Christian Academy (LCA). Children will be able to come to the CRC to play, study, spend time with our staff, and find a place of refuge anytime day or night. Also, a number of children who come from the worst situations of abuse and neglect will be rescued out of their homes and live in safety at the CRC. These children and other sponsored children from the area will be able to attend the LCA located at the center. The LCA will provide an excellent education to children in grades 1-6 through well-qualified teachers and low student-to-teacher ratios.
In Zambia, children in grades 7, 9, & 12 must pass a national standardized exam in order to continue to the next grade. Children around Lusaka in need of taking the exam must travel to a location designated as an “Examination Center”. The students must pay a fee to take the exam every time. The MEC will generate income by being an Examination Center for community and government school children around Lusaka. Along with holding national exams, the MEC will be utilized as a tutoring center for children in grade 7 who need extra help preparing for the exam.

While these will be the initial primary purposes of the MEC, the size and configuration of the building will allow us to conduct other educational and ministry programs as the need arises. The center has great potential not only as a resource in the community but also as a prototype for other ministry-education centers in the future. It is an important step forward in bringing the best education possible to the children of Zambia.

Currently our construction crew is hard at work and we hope to have the facility running by the new school term in January!
