Camp LIFE 2009 was a huge success as the children found themselves consumed by the love of Jesus! From the exclamations that Jesus loves ME to the intimate time that they spent in communion, God allowed them to receive and share His love. We are very excited about Camp LIFE 2010, but at the same time we realize the difficult road that lies before us.
The theme for Camp LIFE 2010 is JOY! But these kids live in absolute poverty. Many of them are beaten and go without food for days at a time. Most every child has lost a mother or father and probably a few brothers and sisters in the last few years. We have kids showing up everyday at our CRCs because they were kicked out of their house or are just scared to go back. How does anyone, let alone a child, find joy in this type of situation?
God has been slowly guiding us through how He wants to show these kids His joy. He points us to James 1:2, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds…” So we are beginning to understand that joy is more than just happiness, pleasure or having our needs met. Joy surpasses all of those things and can come, often more so, in the face of adversity. So it seems that joy, if it is to come in the face of suffering and trials, is very contrary to our natural reaction. Our prayer for the next year is that God would teach us and the children of Zambia to be joyful. We can’t do it on our own so it’s got to be His joy.
The plan is for each child to experience such an overwhelming sense of joy that it feels like its going to explode out of them. Our logo for 2010 reflects that explosion of joy that only God can bring and that He will bring to the lives of each one of these children in the summer of 2010. And of course if you are going to talk about joy then you can’t have just any song, it has to be the most fun and require more dancing than any other Camp LIFE song ever has. Well I think we may have something here…
