Holly Scurry’s love for missions began in 5th grade when she began participating in local and international mission trips through Highland Park United Methodist Church. When she was 14, she attended Young Life Camp at Frontier Ranch and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. Holly’s passion for missions continued while she was at Texas A&M University where she co-founded Aggies in Mission – a mission group mobilizing 150 Aggies to build houses for homeless families in Juarez, Mexico every spring break. During her four summers throughout college, Holly worked at Pine Cove Christian Camps – a high energy summer camp located in Tyler, TX for families and youth. With further internship experience from Family Life Ministries in Little Rock, AR, as well as ministry training with Focus on the Family’s Institute program in Colorado Springs, CO, it quickly became clear that God was setting every detail in place to begin Holly on an indescribable journey that she never could have imagined.
While serving at Pine Cove, Holly met the Kendall family and learned of Greer’s passion for Zambia. The plight of the orphan child deeply burdened Holly’s heart and after her first international trip to Zambia with Family Legacy Missions International, she fell in love with the children of that nation. Graduating in May of 2003 with a degree in Speech Communications and a minor in Business, Holly was compelled by God to pursue full-time missions as Family Legacy’s first full-time employee.
In Zambia, statistics became personal for Holly. Children like Lahema, Shadrach, Emma, Bupe, Esther, Barnabas, Faith, Jackson, and Gabriel will be forever engraved in her heart. These precious souls of God and countless other children are the motivation for Holly’s unstoppable passion to be a voice for the voiceless and make the cause of the orphan child known to the world. Holly believes whole-heartedly that the best way to reach these beloved children of God is by engaging families in the Great Commission as they become the hands and feet of Jesus, touching His children one by one. Holly believes that active participation in the Great Commission is God’s call for Believers of all ages, and she is truly humbled and eternally thankful to the Lord for allowing her to take part in transforming the nation of Zambia one child at a time.
Holly is a faithful member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and enjoys serving in their children’s ministry and adult choir. The legacy she hopes to leave is one of living each day for God’s greater glory, seeking first His Kingdom, and making Him known through discipling families as they follow God’s command in James 1:27 to “visit the widows and the orphans in their distress.”
Holly’s life verse is Acts 20:24, “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord has given me ~ the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”
Here are some of the links to Holly’s current and previous newsletters as well as stories of a few of her children…enjoy!
